Calculate job margin

Which tool do you need?

Each tool covers one moment in a job: pricing it, doing it, and checking it made money. Use them on their own, or see how Foreman keeps all three on the same job.

Before the job: the quote

Use the quote template when a client needs a price they can say yes to. It keeps the scope, the priced lines, what's excluded and how long the price stands in one document, with a clear way to accept, so there's less back-and-forth about what was included.

On the day: the work order

Use the work order template for the person doing the work. It's the same job without the prices: what's in scope, what to bring, how to get on site, and when to stop and ask before doing extra work that would need a variation.

After the job: the margin

Use the profit margin calculator to check whether a job paid. Enter the revenue and the labour, materials and other costs, and it shows gross profit, margin and markup side by side, which is where the difference between the two usually becomes obvious.

Free tools: common questions

Do I need an account to use these tools?

No. The templates and the calculator work in your browser without signing up, and nothing you type is uploaded.

Can I print or send the templates?

Yes. Fill in the quote or work order template, then print it or copy it as text into an email or message.

What's the difference between margin and markup?

Markup is profit as a share of cost; margin is profit as a share of the price. The calculator shows both for the same job, so you can see why a 50% markup is not a 50% margin.
